The End of the Universe

Quranic Verse

Arabic

إِذَا ٱلشَّمْسُ كُوِّرَتْ وَإِذَا ٱلنُّجُومُ ٱنكَدَرَتْ وَإِذَا ٱلْجِبَالُ سُيِّرَتْ

Translation

English

"When the sun is wrapped up [in darkness], and when the stars fall, dispersing, and when the mountains are removed." (Surah At-Takwir 81:1-3)

Introduction

The Quran describes events that will unfold at the end of time—when the sun darkens, stars fall, and mountains vanish. These verses align with modern scientific theories about the future of the universe, including the death of the sun, supernova explosions, and the shifting of Earth’s landscape.

Scientific Validation

1. The Sun Will Go Dark

  • The sun shines because of nuclear fusion, where hydrogen atoms combine to release energy.
  • Over time, the sun will run out of fuel, expand into a red giant, and later shrink into a white dwarf—becoming dark and cold.
  • This process will happen in about 5 billion years, turning the sun into a dim, lifeless object.
  • Scientists predict that in about 5 billion years, the sun will become a red giant, expanding outward. The expanding sun might engulf the moon and even parts of Earth.

2. Stars Will Disappear

  • Stars go through life cycles. Some grow old and explode in massive blasts called supernovae.
  • After a supernova, some stars collapse into black holes, which pull in everything around them, making them invisible.
  • The Quran’s mention of stars falling and disappearing fits these scientific observations.

3. Mountains Will Be Removed

  • Mountains are formed by tectonic activity, but they are not permanent.
  • Earthquakes, erosion, and asteroid impacts can break mountains down over time.
  • In the distant future, extreme geological shifts may cause mountains to vanish completely.

Reflection

The Quran teaches that nothing in the universe lasts forever—not the sun, not the stars, not even the mountains. Science confirms this. The more we learn about space and Earth, the more we see how everything follows a set system.

Conclusion

The Quran’s description of the end of the world aligns with scientific discoveries about the future of the universe. The sun will burn out, stars will explode, and Earth’s surface will change. These signs remind us that everything is temporary and encourage us to reflect on the deeper purpose of life.
